How to Host a Bewitching Halloween Party

The beautiful month of October is here! With October comes the official start of holiday entertaining. Yes, I know it’s hard to believe, but the holiday season is upon us, so let’s get started with a dark and moody Halloween party! Every October I make it a goal to host at least one Halloween dinner. This year’s dinner theme was a dark and moody witches’ dinner. This dinner was inspired by the movie Hocus Pocus, which I used to watch over and over as a child. I’ve now turned my younger kid sister on to the movie, so I try to incorporate a few of her ideas into the party as well. This year I wanted to create a table that was dark and moody, complete with a black cat cake, and witches brew (aka boozy pomegranate punch)…so much fun! I have to say, I think this is one of my most favorite tablescapes I’ve created. Here’s how I created a dark and moody table in ten simple steps.

A Halloween-themed tablescape with a black vine pumpkin, dark grey dinner plates, dark red and purple flowers, and white candles, all on a black tablecloth.

Step One: The tablecloth.

You’ll want to use a black tablecloth and black table runner to create that dark broody presence all around your table. I like to lay the tablecloth down and then scrunch the runner down the center of the table. Don’t make the runner perfectly straight, instead crinkle it a bit to give it more of a “moody” feel.

Step Two: The centerpiece.

I wanted the center of my table to be dramatic, but simple. Instead of flowers in the center of the table, I went with an all black wicker pumpkin. It’s perfect because it is in keeping with the “moodiness” of the table, but doesn’t distract from all the other elements happening within this tablescape.

Step Three: Flowers.

I think flowers should be a part of almost any tablescape, even for Halloween. Here’s the thing, with the theme of this table being dark and moody, you‘ll want to use dark colors like deep reds and purples. I also wanted to create the look of vials that witches tend to use (I mean, you know, in the movies…) so instead of using normal flowers vases, I used three different decanters, all of different shapes and sizes. I know that sounds odd, but the decanters add an element of elegance and class, but also give off a very moody vibe. I loved this look. Tip: buy your flowers a few days in advance and let them begin to slowly die. The dying flowers add and extra special “spooky” touch to the table.

Step Four: Candles.

The candles are such a major part of this tablescape. I like using pillar candles to create height on the table. Tip: let the candles burn down a little before guests arrive. This will give them an older look and allow for wax to drip down the sides.

Step Five: Set the table.

Use a mix of black and dark grey when setting the table. I went with a darker grey plate, coup champagne glasses, matte black utensils, and charcoal black napkins. To give each place setting a special touch, I tied a single flower into each napkin and finished the places off with mini white pumpkins.

Step Six: Fill in your table.

To give the table a little life and color, I scattered dried pumpinos down the center of my table. Not only are these pretty, but because they are dried, they create that look of an almost rotten pumpkin, which feels very fitting for this table. I then added a few decorations like black scarecrows, cauldrons, and scattered some dying flowers around the plates. Tip: just before you are about to sit down, add water and dry ice to the cauldrons to create an eerie graveyard looks.

Step Seven: Add a cheese plate.

I don’t know if witches like cheese, but adding a black marble cheese plate not only adds elegance, but also some delicious food. Be sure to include some wrinkly figs and deep, dark pomegranates onto your plate…naturally “spooky” looking foods.

Step Eight: The wine.

Place a decanted of red wine at one end of the table. This is not only convenient, but also adds yet another layer of spookiness.

Step Nine: Make a Black Cat Cake.

Yes, I added this as a step because the cake is such a huge part of this table, and trust me, it is so much easier than you think to make. Plus, no Witches Dinner could ever be complete without a black cat. The bonus here is that you get to eat the cake…it’s so chocolatey and delicious.

Step Ten: Witches Brew.

A mix of pomegranate, cider, and vodka (or tequila). Just trust me, your table needs this brew. Happy Halloween!

Black Cat Cake Recipe

65 minutes
20 minutes
(1) 3-layer cake

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 Cups All-Purpose Flood
  • 2 1/4 Cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 1/2 Cups Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 1/4 Teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 2 1/4 Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons Kosher Salt
  • 3 Eggs at Room Temperature
  • 1 Cup + 2 Tablespoons Buttermilk
  • 1/4 Cup + 2 Tablespoons Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 3/4 Cup Canola Oil
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons Vanilla Extract
  • 3/4 Cup Hot Black Coffee
  • For The Frosting:
  • 2 Cups Salted Butter Softened, 4 Sticks
  • 5 Cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2-3 Teaspoons Drops Black Food Dye or 2 Activated Charcoal
  • Black Sanding Sugar for Coating
  • 1 Cup Melted Semi Sweet Chocolate
  • Candy Eyes for Decorating
  • 3 in Black Licorice, cut in half

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease three 8-inch round cake pans. Line with parchment paper, then butter/spray with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl combine the flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer (or use a hand held mixer) beat together the eggs, buttermilk, Greek yogurt, canola oil and vanilla until smooth. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients with the mixer on low until there are no longer any clumps of flour. Add the coffee and mix until combined. The batter should be pourable, but not super thin.
  4. Divide the batter evenly among the 3 cake pans. Transfer to the oven and bake 20 to 25 minutes, until the tops are just set and no longer wiggly in the center. Remove and let cool five minutes, then run a knife around the edges of the pan. Cool on wire racks.
  5. To make the frosting: Add the butter and powdered sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer (or use a hand held mixer). Beat the butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla together until the butter is light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add the food die (or charcoal) and beat until combined.
  6. To assemble the cake. Place 1 cake layer, flat side up, on a plate or cake stand. With a knife or offset spatula, spread the top with frosting. Place the second layer on top, rounded side up, and spread the frosting. Add on the final layer, rounded side up and evenly spread the remaining frosting on the top and sides of the cake. Take the black sanding sugar and use your hands to gently rub it up and down the side and top of the cake until the cake is fully coated.
  7. To make the cat’s ears: Transfer the melted chocolate to a ziplock bag and snip off a small portion of the corner of the bag. On a parchment lined baking sheet, pipe out two large solid triangles and one solid circle (for the nose). Place in the freezer to harden for 5-10 minutes.
  8. Just before serving the cake, stick the ears on top of the cake. Add the candy eyes and nose, securing with a dab of melted chocolate if needed. Insert 3 black licorice on either side of the nose to act as whiskers. Serve the cake at room temperature.
