Set the Time
In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice generally falls at the end of the calendar year. Hosting a solstice gathering around a time filled with family gatherings and holiday office parties can be a challenge. Consider an afternoon meal or host an evening open house, allowing guests to stop by after work. In areas with warm weather year round, move out to the patio after the meal to watch the sun fade while reclining on benches and lounges. For colder climates, configure a viewing area near windows to watch the sunset. After dusk, encourage everyone to hang around, taking in the good company, food and drink.
Let the Light Shine
The light outside may be short-lived on this day, but don’t let that stop your party from shining bright. Whether you reside in a warmer climate or hibernate when the cold sets in, there are still ways to enjoy a warm glow. In warm climates, guests will love mingling on the deck, where twinkling string lights create an inviting atmosphere for them to sit on weather-resistant chairs and benches while enjoying a drink. If you’re keeping the celebration indoors, accent side tables with candles and let everyone share what they’re grateful for while relaxing on the sofa as the fireplace keeps them cozy.
Go Green
Since the winter solstice has its roots in nature, add subtle hints of green to your party decor. Keep it authentic with an elegant arrangement of faux evergreen branches, pine cones and berries in a ceramic vase, or adorn your mantel with succulents and other simple botanicals. Have guests help themselves to food from green serveware, and accent your tablescape with similarly toned napkins and placemats. Complete the ambiance with forest-inspired potpourri or scented candles.
Plan for All
No celebration is complete without a nourishing meal. Satisfy your guests’ appetites with warm foods that complement the time of year, including soups, stews, roasted meat dishes and freshly baked rolls. Keep with tradition by adding side dishes and beverages that other cultures enjoy on this day, such as pomegranates, walnuts and kabocha squash. Wash it all down with a nice mulled wine, apple cider or tea. Guests will enjoy a casual buffet table where they can serve themselves, or make it a three-course meal for a more formal experience.
Have Fun
Encourage bonding at your event with interactive games and activities. Trivia is always a group favorite. You can also leave out popular board games and jigsaw puzzles for quieter entertainment throughout the night. If the weather is warm enough, move the fun outside for a bonfire with lots of storytelling and singing centered around winter or sunshine themes. At the end of the night, offer each guest a parting gift of a bag filled with miniature candles, tasty snacks and a personalized thank-you note.
Invite everyone back year after year to make this an annual event that’s just about hanging out and enjoying life.
