Send Colorful Invitations & Set Out Bright Decorations
Include your kiddo in the planning to truly make it their party. If you’re sending out digital invites, attach a video of your child holding a unicorn stuffed animal while requesting the presence of their friends at their birthday celebration. Sending invites via snail mail? Ask for their help signing paper invitations as you address envelopes. Keep the guest list short if your child is still a toddler—limit it to close family and one or two friends for a low-pressure party. If they’re older, consider the limits of your space when creating the guest list. Are you hosting the party at home? Is the yard big enough for magical games and unicorn races? These factors will help you to finalize the number of party guests your little one can invite. No matter how many kids you invite, it’s a good idea to have a play space separate from where you’re serving sweets. That way, leftovers, crumbs and cake are contained in one area, making clean-up easier.
The day of the party, adorn your home-turned-mystical castle with unicorn-themed decorations. Hang rainbow garlands in the front hallway, and station a few pastel balloons at the door to welcome young guests. Arrange vibrant centerpieces on tables in the living room or out on the patio, and don’t forget the florals. Pot pink and purple blooms in a glass jar, and fill them with colored sand for a magical tablescape. Serve treats and sweets here later on—look for table cloths in pastel blue and rosy hues. Fill gift bags with small toys, lollipops, bubbles and other goodies, and place these on a nearby console table for a charming display.
Organize Magical Games and Mystical Crafts
Invite everyone to enjoy on-theme games in the play area, whether that’s out in the mystical forest (the backyard) or in a secret cave (the basement). If the weather permits, set up a unicorn relay race outdoors. Divide the kids into two teams, and have the first runner wear a unicorn horn and tail. Make a horn out of cardboard or use a party hat instead, and tie a ribbon or fluffy scarf around their waist for a colorful tail. When you shout “go,” each “unicorn” races to the next team member and passes their gear to them. If the weather’s not suited for outdoor play, have fun inside with magical twists on classic party games. Play pin-the-horn-on-the-unicorn, or let the kids take turns hitting a unicorn piñata.
When the kids are done moving around, have everyone sit in a circle for some quieter fun. Have each child describe what their unicorn would look like if they had one. What color would it be? Would it have wings, a mermaid tail or even breathe fire? Then break out the markers and crayons and have them draw their creations. Roll out some butcher paper or a table mat to protect your rug or craft table, and make sure everyone has enough glue, glitter and gold to bring their mystical buddy to life.
Offer Enchanting Cakes & Sweets
Sing “Happy Birthday” to your little one around a classic vanilla cake with brightly-colored sprinkles—add a unicorn horn to the cake for an on-theme finish, or opt for individual cupcakes for mess-free, single serving desserts. Alternatively, set up a frost-your-own-cupcake bar on the kitchen table. Start with a display of unfrosted cupcakes, then set out bowls of blue, pink, and purple frosting as well as a dish of sprinkles. Add a few wooden sticks in each bowl of frosting to allow kids to swirl different colors atop their cupcake. For a show-stopping finish, sprinkle the cupcakes with edible glitter. Need ideas for a colorful birthday beverage? Combine your favorite milk or milk substitute with bright strawberries, raspberries and other in-season fruits (maybe even sneak in a veggie) in the blender. Add fun paper straws to drinks for a sweet final touch.
Even with the burst of energy from these magical sweets, don’t be surprised if everyone wants a bit if quiet time after all the fun. Settle down to watch your little one open their presents, then send guests home with their gift bags. Use our unicorn party ideas as a starter guide for planning your kiddo’s special day.
