Less Is More
When working in a small space, it’s important to select pieces that blend function with style, such as a hanging mirror that doubles as wall art and a place to get ready in the morning. Begin by considering your overall interior design scheme. Minimalist, modern and Scandinavian motifs are all great choices for small bedrooms because they achieve a sophisticated look using consistent color palates and little clutter.
Light and Bright
Take a look at the bedroom floor and walls. One easy way to make a small room feel big is with light-hued flooring and wall paint. If new flooring or re-staining isn’t an option, try adding a sisal area rug; not only is sisal light in color, but it also feels breezy and adds simple texture in tight spaces. As an alternative to painting your bedroom walls, hang art prints with simple white and grey color schemes to fill empty space on walls and brighten up the room.
Incorporate floor, table and desk lamps that illuminate every corner of your small bedroom. To get the most from your lamp, choose light fabric shades and silver, white or clear stands. Guide light where it’s needed most with arc lamps. Drape string lights over window frames, walls, or hang from the ceiling for a low-light option that creates a welcoming atmosphere after the sun sets.
Illusion of space
Just like the phrase “fake it ‘til you make it,” there are ways to create the illusion of more space in smaller rooms. Hang mirrors on the wall over a bed or prop standing floor mirrors against a wall to expand the room visually. Arrange curtains high and wide on windows for a grand appearance that makes your ceilings seem taller than they are. If your bed is centered on a wall, it’s likely taking up a majority of the room. Consider rotating and pushing it lengthwise against the wall, freeing up space in the room’s center and creating the illusion of a larger bedroom.
Stylish Storage
Take advantage of unused vertical space with floating shelves in white or light wood stains. Arrange your favorite books, candles or succulents here to create a chic display. For the floor, look for furniture that serves dual purposes, such as ottomans with storage compartments. Find one or two in colors that fit your bedroom’s design scheme and store blankets and extra pillows inside. These pieces also function as extra seating for guests in a pinch. Rattan bins and baskets bring natural texture and depth to a room and add storage functionality, serving as chic laundry bins or holding blankets.
