Wool Rugs
There’s nothing like the softness, warmth and color that handwoven and hand-tufted rugs bring to a room. Our collection of rug designs features modern neutrals, traditional designs, artistic graphics and sculpted dimensionals in plush 100% wool. The upkeep is minimal, too. Wool is naturally stain-resistant thanks to natural oils that prevent dirt from adhering to the yarn. And because wool is a durable fiber that springs back, it’s a practical choice for high-traffic areas or underneath various types of sofas.
Construction & Care:
Hand-Knotted: In a technique that has been handed down from generation to generation, yarn is wrapped and then knotted around each warp thread. Each piece of yarn is then hand-cut and hand-tamped to form tightly constructed knotted carpet rugs. The attention to detail by expert craftsmen results in a beautiful rug with a lasting value and presence.
Hand-tufted: With the aid of a tufting tool, skilled tradesman pass yarn through a frame-stretched, fabric backing on which a pattern is drawn on. Both cut and looped piles are achieved through this process. The tufted pile rug is backed with latex for stability, then with fabric for a finished look.
Hand-loomed: From luxurious shag rugs to versatile cotton rag rugs, a variety of looks and textures are achieved with the use of a loom. A combination of colors and yarn thicknesses is intricately handwoven to create contemporary or traditional designs. Each step of construction of our woven rugs involves hand-finishing by skilled artisans.
Machine-loomed: An efficient way to shape a variety of textures at a value is with the machine-loomed process. Power-loomed rugs are usually synthetic or fiber and can include cut pile weaves, rib patterns and bouclé weaves.
To care for the rug, vacuum it regularly. For the first two to three months, additional vacuuming without the beater bar turned on may be necessary to manage the normal shedding that occurs. If a little one spills a cup of juice or a pet has an accident, blot the spill immediately with a clean, absorbent white cloth. Avoid using cleaning solvents or scrubbing excessively to keep the rug’s texture intact. We suggest using products designed specifically for wool or dry extraction powders. For the best results, periodic professional cleaning can restore rugs to their original appearance. Shag rugs will continue to shed for their entire life—cut the rugs’ loose tufts to keep the rug looking fresh. To avoid any abrasions, consistently rotate the rug and avoid placing it in direct sunlight. Consider placing the textile over a rug pad to keep its foundation good as new.
Natural Fiber Rugs
Our natural fiber rugs bring an organic look and neutral texture in a flat weave to any setting. They’re a natural choice for adding a casual look to classic living and family rooms, or a relaxed kickback feel to the weekend cottage. Our collection is woven in interesting patterns by craftsmen whose rug weaving skills have been handed down for generations.
Construction & Care
Our fiber rugs are handwoven or loomed from a variety of all-natural plants and grasses such as jute and sisal. Many of these types of rugs are backed with latex for cushioning and stability, and to extend the life of the rug. To care for the rug, vacuum regularly. Immediately blot accidental spills with a clean, absorbent white cloth. For a more precise spot clean, use a dry extraction powder that removes hard-to-remove marks. To recreate a brand new rug’s finish, professional dry extraction cleaning services provide pristine cleans. Natural fibers are quite absorbent and can shrink and expand with changes in humidity—these are intended for indoor use only. To keep the original shape, we recommend avoiding placing these in humid rooms, such as the bathroom. Avoid wear and tear by keeping the rug out of direct sunlight and periodically rotating it to reduce abrasions. Use a multisurface rug pad when placing one over finished hardwood floors or carpeting.
Hair-on-Hide Rugs
Handcrafted by skilled artisans, hair-on-hide rugs create an organic and contemporary look with natural texture. This type of rug showcases a sophisticated color palette that can fit various home aesthetics.
Construction & Care
Using cutting edge technology, each rug is constructed from cowhide to create an eye-catching pattern. Individual pieces are then stitched together, glued to a cotton-latex backing and finally stitched on all four sides. To vacuum the rug, set the vacuum on the lowest pile setting and carefully glide over it. Placed over a multisurface rug pad, rotate the rug periodically for even wear.
Cotton Rugs
Bringing a breath of fresh air into a room, cotton rugs provide a room with sleek decor without breaking the budget. Whether it’s by an entryway, in front of the kitchen sink, on a bathroom floor or in the den, the rug provides the home with an abundance of useful opportunities. In fact, they’re so much fun, we introduce new patterns and colors with every season.
Construction & Care
From solid colors to geometric patterns, our soft cotton rugs are handwoven on traditional looms for an authentic finish. Look for the machine-washable label on smaller rugs for an effortless clean. To wash larger sized rugs, opt for industrial-sized washers or dry cleaning for a crisp finish. Avoid unwanted fading by placing a cotton rug in shaded areas of the home, avoiding direct sunlight. Use a rug pad underneath the runner to keep the floor and rug safe from tearing.
Synthetic Rugs
Our synthetic fiber rugs present value in a new generation of man-made materials. Mimicking the look of both natural fiber and wool rugs, these carpets naturally resist stains, and wear and tear. Given that synthetics are extremely durable, colorfast and ideal for high-traffic areas, they’re also priced at low-costs so you can frequently update rooms with new seasonal color and texture. We also feature a collection of indoor-outdoor polypropylene rugs. Machine-loomed for a tight weave, these types of rugs add a sophisticated, interior look to exterior settings. They also make smart choices for the kitchen, mudroom, basement or laundry room.
Construction & Care
Synthetic floor coverings are constructed from olefin, polyester, acrylic, nylon or a blend of these fibers. The intricate makeup of an indoor rug calls for regular vacuuming. To clean accidental spills, immediately blot the area with a clean, absorbent white cloth. For a more thorough clean, spot clean the spill with shampoo ora mild detergent. We recommend periodic professional cleaning—these deep cleans make your rug look as good as new. If the desired use is indoors, place the rug over a rug mat that prevents wear and tear. Meanwhile, indoor-outdoor rugs should be washed outside with a mild detergent and rinsed off with a garden hose.
Rug Pads
Because rugs wear primarily from the back first, rug pads placed underneath your accent piece lengthen its life, as well as provide it stability and cushioning. Crate and Barrel provides two protective options, depending on the construction and use of the rug:
Multisurface Thin Rug Pad
Used over both carpeted and hard-surfaced floors, non-slip pads provide a double-sided, cushioned base for a variety of rug types. The rug pad’s durable build will not stain, discolor or leave marks on your floors. When using over carpeted surfaces, opt for the polyester, felt side while the latex side should be used over hard-surface and radiant-heated floors.
Multisurface Thick Rug Pad
A multisurface thick rug pad is great for both carpeted and hard-surface floors. This non-slip, reversible pad provides a firm yet cushioned base that’s an ideal for for all rug types, especially hand-tufted and hand-knotted wool rugs. The thicker pads have an array of benefits—they hide irregularities in stone and tile floors, reduce puckering around furniture legs, insulate noise and cold, and make vacuuming more efficient. To protect both the rug and the floor, use the polyester felt side over carpeted surfaces and use the latex side on hard-surface floors and floors with radiant heating.
Construction & Care
The rug pad’s polyester and latex sides are made from post-industrial recycled fibers. Each side of the rug pad is specially treated to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew—great for homes with pets and kids. The flame retardant pieces of equipment are also Green Label certified, introducing an eco-friendly presence in any home. To clean the rug pad, wipe the latex side with a damp cloth and vacuum the fabric side. Trying to secure a fun-shaped kids' room rug? Using scissors, simply cut the rug pad into the shape of the rug itself for an exact fit. The indoor rug pad’s durability guarantees a long life—15 years to be exact.
